Davao and Mindanao fashion is taking a serious turn and on its way for global exposure. With mentors and professional judges, the design aesthetics of the apparel and accessories designers tasked to create unique and wearable local tribe-inspired pieces have changed. They are now geared to appeal to the mainstream market.
Two big Kadayawan fashion events brought Davao’s best designers forward: Habi Kadayawan and Kadayawan Ball.
Habi Kadayawan, on its second season, was fine tuned. There are now three categories: professional, hobbyist, and student. It’s a move that will encourage the winners to go beyond winning a title and go into production for the local and international market.
Kadayawan Ball is a new contest. It encourages the apparel designers to create wearable, Davao tribe-inspired formal attire. Inspiration is the key word. This sidetracks the designers from creating another costume-y apparel.
