FINALLY, peace and quiet. Not even a bit of shut-eye for more than twenty-hours, I was close to being psychotic. Returning home, I shuttled from one airport to another and amused myself with movies on a tiny screen and asked, “are we there yet?” at the end of each film. I was surrounded with people the entire time, the races shifted from destination to another, so did the time zone. Yes, changing of the time zone and the dreaded jet lag that came with it.
It used to be that getting over a jet lag was easier. Not anymore. Is must be the age, what else can it be? Well, maybe throw in the need to get back on the desk ASAP because the credit card bills will be arriving any time soon. Palpitation.
I need a vacation coming back from a vacation. I think we all need this. After the most recent long journeys I took, my hometown “staycation” was at the Marco Polo Davao Hotel. I call it my decompression chamber, my time alone to rejuvenate and slip back to the local time zone… in style.
The “shifting” space for me was the new Premier Room of the hotel. Three floors of the Marco Polo were redesigned to fit the needs of the 21st century business and leisure travelers.
The look of the newest room category of the hotel is chic and relaxing in hues of ivory and mahogany with accents of rich chocolate and caramel. The hint of masculinity of the color exudes warmth and old-world feel but interpreted in modern appointments.
I always find daylight the best way to brighten up living spaces. The floor-to-ceiling windows not only usher the natural light but reveal the spectacular landscapes of the Davao—busy streets and the captivating views of Davao Gulf and the majestic Mount Apo—as well.

The new look and feel of comfort of the Premier Room extends to the bathroom. The marble bathroom features a deep soaking tub, glass-partitioned hot and cold shower, soft cotton bathrobes and towels, and the Quercus line of bed and bath products by Penhaligon’s of London.
“More than just bed and bath, a Premier Room has an LCD television with cable channels, a mini-ref, a digital safe and a clock radio with iPod dock, among others. An executive desk equipped with stationery supplies, and telephone and internet access makes short work of the tasks on hand. What sets the room apart from the rest is the coffee machine, dedicated to satisfy you coffee fix as you please,” shared Patty Tan, Marco Polo Davao’s Media Communications Officer.

For a staycation, ordering in is the way to go. The Room Service Menu offerings are said to be the best with the Asian cuisine being the most popular. The Three-Bean Salad with Cajun-Spiced Shrimps, Squids and Pomelos, and the Roasted Tomato Soup with Parmesan Dumplings and Bacon Crisps (from Polo Bistro) were fantastic. Light yet filling.

The only time I had to leave the room was to enjoy a therapeutic massage at the Lazuli Spa, the best spa in the city by far. The three-hour luxury treatment was a dream.
