Kicking in style with Havaianas

THE kegs came rolling months early than the famed Oktoberfest of the country. Germany scored the goals and took home the coveted FIFA World Cup. The country welcomed their football heroes and raised the ale filled steins!

Recently somewhere across the globe, another group, young ladies this time, celebrated their triumph for winning a locally organized football fest held at the football field of the Ateneo de Davao University Matina Campus.

Havaianas and its Southern Mindanao distributor, Martish Marketing Company, partnered with the Ateneo de Davao University Athletics for its All-girls 7 A Side Futbol Fest. The event was participated by more than 200 students aged 16 years old and younger, and an open category participated by local football clubs.

Martish, a company built by two women, not only succeeded in kicking off a good relationship with the local sports community, they also found a partner in the Ateneo Athletics in their aim to empower women. Together, the team up exemplified girl power through this Futbol Fest. “We are looking forward to support Ateneo in its vision to make more sports programs for women in the years to come,” Marga Nograles remarked in her opening speech. The fact that this all-girls football competition is the first of its kind in the country makes the partnership very promising.

The Ateneo Grade School and Ateneo High School football teams emerged champion for the 12 years old and below and 14 years old and below categories respectively; Sakya Football Club won the 16 years old and below category while Punta del Sol was champion for the Open Category. The winning teams were awarded individual medals and trophies from Havaianas, and the MVP of each category and the open category champion received Havaianas Gift Certificates for a pair of stylish flip-flops.

As the world teams were booting it off, Havaianas kicked off the football season with the release of the 2014 limited edition Havaianas TEAMS collection, which became available in June. With a roster of 16 iconic national teams, each fan had a chance to pledge their allegiance to their team of choice in true fashion.

And in true Havaianas fashion I rooted for Argentina by wearing their colors on my flipflops because I believe in their fancy footsteps—those twirling, suave tango feet could be applied on the football field and win them the trophy. Well, maybe not this year.
