My Davao: Mt. Apo

Where did Mt. Apo's name come from?

The majestic Mt. Apo watches over our land. Also known as Apo Sandawa, the Philippines' highest peak rises at 2,954 meters above sea level. Mt. Apo is a Natural Park and a protected area.

Apo, where the name of Mt. Apo is derived from, means "revered elder", a title of respect for the Lumad tribes. The Manobo and Kalagan tribes originally referred to the peak as Apo Sandawa, the spirit of the mountain.

To the tribes living in the foothills, Apo Sandawa is also an ancestor spirit and Mt. Apo is a sacred ground.
