The ALI-Davao Carbon Forest is one of the very few urban green spaces in Davao City. It can act as a carbon sink that can absorb and store toxic carbon from the air, while also serving as a wildlife sanctuary. The PEF, through the help of dedicated volunteers, was able to plant and nurture over 6,000 trees in 2020. But more needs to be done, if the aim is to transform a 6-hectare land into a lush forest full of native trees.
The PEF in partnership with the Ayala Land Inc. launches its VOLUNTOURIST program at the ALI-Davao Carbon Forest in Bago Gallera, Davao City. The program is designed to engage volunteers in forest restoration as well as raise funds to plant and maintain more trees.
For a donation of Php 700.00, voluntourists get to plant a tree in their name and sponsor its maintenance for the next six months. In addition, they also get to see the Carbon Forest through a refreshing and informative Forest Walk. Through this initiative, voluntourists can have an immersive and engaging volunteer experience as the PEF takes tree planting to a whole new level.
Voluntourists can learn how to care for a nursery, including collecting, bagging, and watering of seedlings, and plant maintenance. They also get to try everything from land preparation to the actual planting and tagging of their seedlings.
The program is capped off with the Forest Walk where they get the chance to see various endemic trees and plants that are just waiting to be discovered.
